The Utah MSW Format-First Census

Methodology · 2027 Edition

How Utah's MSW Census Gets Built

Every fact on this site comes from a university-published source, checked in October 2026. Where facts were missing — most visibly, every tuition rate — we label the gap instead of guessing, and the format-first ranking is scored on what could be verified: accreditation, delivery, and access.

Why this count is Utah-only

Utah’s MSW landscape doesn’t fit a cost-first template — because it can’t. Four programs, all fully CSWE-accredited, and not one of them publishes a program-level per-credit tuition rate. A cost ranking of Utah MSWs would be built on borrowed rates and guesses, so this census works a different axis: delivery format. The U confirms campus, fully online, and hybrid. Utah State runs a statewide campus network from Logan. UVU runs a hybrid cohort around Friday in-person sessions. BYU runs an intensive 20-month campus cohort. That is the real decision set, verified one Utah program at a time from published Utah university sources, with the trail shown for every fact.

What we’ll put a number on — and what we won’t

Published-input rule

A number appears on this site only when the university has published it outright — a credit total from the catalog, a field-hour total from the field manual, a delivery mode from the program page. Nothing is inferred: an unconfirmed detail is labeled, never estimated. In this edition the rule produces zero tuition estimates across all four programs — and that zero is a finding, not a failure.

This rule is what makes the census a census instead of a guess. In this edition it means the credit totals are all confirmed (60 at the U and USU, 57 at UVU, 60 at BYU; advanced standing 45 at the U, 38 at UVU) while every tuition cell reads "not published." The ranking respects that: cost is not scored because no Utah program publishes the inputs.

How delivery formats are classified

Utah schools describe delivery in their own words, so the census classifies each confirmed delivery string into a format type — Online, Hybrid, or Campus — and documents the classification in the scoring code. The U’s three confirmed modes make three types; USU’s 15+ statewide campuses are campus delivery, not a separate format; UVU’s weekly Friday in-person plus async online is one hybrid type; BYU’s Provo cohort is campus.

Pace labels ("two-year," "20-month") and field-education hours (900 at USU, 1,050 at BYU) describe the program’s shape, not its delivery format — they don’t count as formats. A format counts only when the university states it outright; anything less is labeled "confirm with the program," never inferred.

The documented judgment calls

Three judgment calls shaped this edition. First, USU’s advanced standing: the school offers a one-year advanced standing option, but its credit total was not confirmed in current primary sources — so the census records the track without a credit count and the ranking treats USU’s confirmed formats as campus only.

Second, BYU’s advanced standing: the school publishes no advanced standing track, so the census records regular standing only — no assumed BSW shortcut.

Third, the empty cost column: rather than borrow university-wide graduate rates (which mix undergraduates, nonresidents, and other programs), the census labels every tuition cell "not published" and the true-cost page explains the gap. A blank we show beats a guess we hide.

How each Utah program got checked

Accreditation status was checked against the CSWE directory of accredited programs and university-published pages, including one Utah quirk that needed care: UVU’s full CSWE accreditation, retroactive to 2017, announced by the university in 2021.

Credit totals came from the university catalog (UVU), the official MSW handbook (the U), and program pages and the field manual (USU, BYU). Delivery modes came from the same primary sources. Every profile lists its sources with links.

Licensure summaries were checked against the Utah legislature’s published statutes: Utah Code 58-60-205 for the CSW/LCSW framework (4,000 hours of clinical training in at least 2 years, including 1,000 hours of mental health therapy), with SB 91 / SB 108 noted. This edition was last verified in October 2026.

Where the census is thin

  • No Utah MSW program publishes a program-level per-credit tuition rate — every tuition cell reads "not published," and cost cannot be compared across programs.
  • USU’s advanced standing credit total was not confirmed in current primary sources; the track is recorded without a count.
  • BYU publishes no advanced standing track; the census records regular standing only.
  • A delivery format counts only when the university states it outright; silence is labeled "confirm with the program," never inferred.
  • Field-hour totals (900 at USU, 1,050 at BYU) are verified where published; hour counts are not quality measures.
  • Licensure summaries describe general paths; confirm current requirements with the Utah Division of Professional Licensing.
