Utah MSW Advanced Standing Tracks

For BSW holders: the shortened MSW tracks that cut the degree to 38–45 credits instead of 57–60. Every Utah program's track, credit load, and eligibility rules — verified against university sources.

What advanced standing is

Advanced standing

A shortened MSW track for holders of a BSW from a CSWE-accredited program. Utah advanced standing tracks run 38–45 credits versus 57–60 for traditional tracks — at any per-credit rate, that is a much smaller bill.

Advanced standing exists because CSWE-accredited BSW programs already cover the MSW’s foundation curriculum: generalist practice, human behavior, policy, research, and the first field placement. The graduate program waives that foundation content and starts you at the advanced concentration year.

Eligibility has two gates: the BSW must come from a CSWE-accredited program, and it must be recent — most programs require it within the last five to seven years, though rules vary. Miss the recency cutoff and you enter the traditional track regardless of your degree.

Utah advanced standing tracks, compared

Credit requirements verified against university catalogs, handbooks, and field manuals. Where a credit total could not be confirmed, it is labeled — not guessed.

Reading the table: the credit gap is the savings gap. UVU’s advanced standing is the shortest confirmed path in the census — 38 credits in the catalog program of study, described as 41 credits full-time on the program page (including summer bridge). The U’s 45-credit track is the other confirmed option. UVU requires the BSW from a CSWE-accredited program within the past 10 years — the most generous recency rule in the census. Confirm current rules with each school before counting on a track.

Eligibility rules to confirm

Every program sets its own advanced standing rules. Before you count on the shortened track, get these three answers in writing:

Advanced standing eligibility checkpoints
CheckpointWhat to ask
BSW recencyHow many years back does the program accept the BSW? (Commonly 5–7; varies.)
GPA thresholdIs there a minimum undergraduate GPA for advanced standing?
Bridge requirementsAny summer bridge course or orientation before the track starts?
Application timingDoes advanced standing have a separate deadline or start term?
Verdict: recency is the most common disqualifier. A BSW earned six or seven years ago may miss a five-year cutoff — ask early, not after you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How much does advanced standing save?

Roughly proportional to the credit reduction. UVU’s advanced standing track versus its 57-credit regular track at the same per-credit rate costs about two-thirds as much — plus months less of foregone earnings and living costs. Without published rates the dollar savings can’t be calculated, but fewer credits always cost less.

Can I do advanced standing online?

The University of Utah confirms campus, online, and hybrid delivery — confirm which modes run the 45-credit advanced standing track with the college. Field education is completed in person regardless of format.

What if my BSW is too old for advanced standing?

You enter the traditional track. Confirm each program’s current recency rule in writing — cutoffs vary, and a BSW that misses one school’s cutoff may clear another’s.

Is advanced standing less rigorous?

No. It covers the same advanced concentration curriculum and field hours as the traditional track’s second year — it waives only the foundation content your accredited BSW already covered.
