The 2027 Utah ranking
Best MSW programs in Utah for 2027, ranked
The University of Utah ranks #1 in the 2027 MSWUtah.com ranking: fully CSWE-accredited, public, and the census’s only program confirming campus, fully online, and hybrid delivery. Every one of the 4 verified Utah MSW programs earns its score from census-verified facts alone — accreditation status first, then how many delivery formats the university confirms, then public or private control. Tuition plays no part: no Utah program publishes a program-level rate to score.
How this ranking was built: practitioner conversations come first — interviews and surveys with working social workers — then the scoring, with each program fact confirmed in a university-published source. The complete trail is in “How we researched this ranking” below.

Verdicts, program by program
#1 University of Utah 100/100
The census’s only program confirming all three delivery modes — campus, fully online, and hybrid — from the public flagship in Salt Lake City. Sixty credits over two years, 45 for advanced standing. No program-specific tuition rate is published, so cost cannot be estimated.
Accreditation standing: 50/50 · Confirmed format flexibility: 30/30 · Public-university access: 20/20
#2 Utah State University 88/100
The census’s widest in-person footprint: a 60-credit two-year track delivered from Logan across 15+ statewide campuses, with 900 field hours. A one-year advanced standing option is offered, but its credit total was not confirmed. No program-specific tuition rate is published.
Accreditation standing: 50/50 · Confirmed format flexibility: 18/30 · Public-university access: 20/20
#3 Utah Valley University 88/100
The hybrid cohort model: 57 credits regular standing and 38 advanced standing with weekly Friday in-person sessions plus asynchronous online coursework, and full CSWE accreditation retroactive to 2017. The Utah Crisis Worker Certification course is the census’s most crisis-response-oriented option. No program-specific tuition rate is published.
Accreditation standing: 50/50 · Confirmed format flexibility: 18/30 · Public-university access: 20/20
#4 Brigham Young University 76/100
The intensive option: a 20-month campus cohort in Provo with 60 credits, a clinical and research emphasis, and 1,050 field hours — the deepest practicum in the census. No advanced standing track is published by the school, and no program-specific tuition rate is published.
Accreditation standing: 50/50 · Confirmed format flexibility: 18/30 · Public-university access: 8/20
How we scored every program
The score is built from three weighted criteria adding to 100 — no reputation surveys, no hidden inputs. Everything scored is a fact from the 2027 census, the same verified dataset behind our program directory; the verification trail is on the methodology page.
Accreditation standing — 50 points
In Utah, CSWE accreditation is the gatekeeper to the CSW and LCSW licenses issued by the Utah Division of Professional Licensing — the reason most students enroll. Nothing else in the census matters more to an applicant, so it gets half the points. All four census programs are fully accredited.
Full marks: Full CSWE accreditation (50). Every program in the 2027 Utah census earns full marks here; the criterion differentiates on the unaccredited, not the ranked.
Confirmed format flexibility — 30 points
Utah is a long, mountainous state: a student in St. George faces a different choice set than one in Ogden. Working adults pick programs they can actually attend, so confirmed delivery variety earns the points — two or more formats takes full marks. Pace labels ("two-year", "20-month") and field-education hours do not count as formats.
Full marks: Two or more confirmed delivery formats (30). One confirmed format earns 18. Each program’s format classification is printed in the scoring code and on this page.
Public-university access — 20 points
No Utah program publishes a program-specific per-credit MSW tuition rate in current primary sources — so cost cannot be scored at all. This criterion stays a control-based access proxy: public universities generally charge lower tuition than private nonprofits. The /true-cost/ census explains the data gap instead of hiding it.
Full marks: Public university (20). Private nonprofit takes 8 — an openly stated proxy, not a measured cost comparison. See /true-cost/ for why no Utah figures are estimated.
How we researched this ranking
Our research team starts from practitioners — interviews and surveys with working social workers — and scores programs only after that, confirming every institutional claim in a primary source. For Utah, that meant:
- The CSWE directory — every program's accreditation status checked against the Council on Social Work Education's own listing, including the evidence trails for newer accreditations (UVU's full accreditation retroactive to 2017).
- University-published pages — program sites, catalogs, handbooks, and field manuals for delivery formats and credit totals. Because Utah schools describe delivery in their own words, each program's format classification is documented in the scoring code: USU's statewide campuses are campus delivery, not a separate format.
- The Utah Division of Professional Licensing — for what accreditation standing means for CSW/LCSW eligibility in Utah.
- The 2027 census record — our census and verification record, including the judgment calls (USU's one-year advanced standing recorded without a credit count since the total was unconfirmed; BYU's advanced standing recorded as not published since the school publishes no such track; no tuition estimates anywhere because no Utah program publishes a program-level rate).
Anything without a primary source behind it never entered a score. Last verified: October 2026.
What this ranking can’t tell you
Honesty requires the other half of the ledger:
- Teaching quality and field placements. No public dataset captures teaching or placements. Utah programs publish their field-hour totals (900 at USU, 1,050 at BYU), but hours aren't quality — ask each school's field office, not just admissions, how placements are secured.
- Cost. We deliberately do not score tuition: no Utah program publishes a program-level per-credit rate, so every program would score identically — and any site claiming a price ranking is estimating from unverified inputs. The true-cost census says so plainly instead of hiding the gap.
- Your fit. The map matters more than the medal. Logan's #2 versus Provo's #4 is a four-hour drive across very different Utah — let your address, schedule, and field-hour needs finish what the scores start.
- Freshness. Dates matter: universities reprice and reformat yearly. Re-check current rates — and the CSWE directory — before applying; our October 2026 verification can't see the future.
- USU's advanced standing is unconfirmed in detail. The school offers a one-year advanced standing option, but its credit total was not confirmed in current primary sources, so the census records it without a count. Confirm eligibility and credits with the school directly.
What Utah social workers earn
The pay context, honestly sourced: the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 2025 median pay of $61,780 for social workers nationally (Occupational Outlook Handbook) — $67,880 for healthcare social workers, $60,280 for mental health and substance abuse social workers, and $59,550 for child, family, and school social workers. Utah’s medians vary by setting and metro — the BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics state profiles carry the Salt Lake City, Provo–Orem, and statewide figures; check those before budgeting around a single number. The MSW’s return also runs through the license it unlocks: Utah’s CSW-to-LCSW path is the route to independent clinical practice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best MSW program in Utah?
By our published methodology, the University of Utah ranks #1 — fully CSWE-accredited, public, and the census’s only program confirming all three delivery modes (campus, fully online, hybrid), with 60-credit two-year and 45-credit advanced standing tracks. Utah State (#2) and Utah Valley (#3) tie at 88 points; the order follows our published tie-break (accreditation tier, then name A–Z). BYU is #4. "Best" still depends on you: format needs, where in Utah you live, and field-hour fit narrow the field fast.
Are there accredited online MSW programs in Utah?
Yes — the University of Utah confirms a fully online MSW option alongside campus and hybrid delivery, and UVU runs a hybrid cohort (weekly Friday in-person plus asynchronous online). Utah State and BYU are campus-based in confirmed sources. All four programs are fully CSWE-accredited. Reconfirm CSWE standing in the CSWE directory before you apply — statuses change.
How do I become a CSW or LCSW in Utah?
Utah licenses social workers through the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL): CSW (MSW plus the ASWB exam) and LCSW (CSW plus 4,000 hours of clinical training in at least 2 years — including 1,000 hours of mental health therapy — plus the ASWB clinical exam). An MSW from a CSWE-accredited program is the education requirement at every level. Our licensing guide covers the full path — verify current rules with DOPL before making plans.
Which Utah MSW program is the cheapest?
That cannot be answered honestly right now: no Utah MSW program publishes a program-level per-credit tuition rate in current primary sources, so this census estimates no costs and this ranking deliberately does not score tuition. Any site ranking Utah MSWs by price is estimating from unverified inputs. See the true-cost census page for the full, honest accounting of what is and isn’t published — and confirm current rates with each university before applying.
Can I trust this ranking?
Trust the inputs and interrogate the rest: each scored fact is verified in the 2027 census, the weights plus the per-program format classifications are printed on this page, and the limitations section says what follows. Cost is absent, not hidden — no Utah program publishes the inputs. No ranking can measure teaching, placements, or fit.
